Top European Football Leagues in the World of Soccer 2025

Often referred to as “The Big Five,” the five most prestigious association football markets in the world are those in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and England. Interestingly, they’re the top European leaders in terms of size and popularity, and when it comes to leagues such as the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, and Serie A.

In 2016, Ace Advisory Zrt., a private Hungarian company that works as a data-driven sports and leisure business consultant, made a list of Europe’s 32 biggest football teams based on their Enterprise Value (EV). With a record-breaking 29 clubs hailing from the Big Five leagues—representing 97% of the top 32’s overall EV—this ranking serves as further proof of their financial strength.

That said, let’s take a closer look at some of these leagues and why they’re considered the most interesting and competitive in Europe.

    Top Soccer Leagues in Europe

Below are some of the best leagues in Europe (and even in world football):

    The Premier League

Perhaps because of the billions of dollars it makes every year or its incredibly large fan base, the English Premier League is widely recognized as one of the best leagues in the world.

The leagues’ clear competitiveness was on full display in the 2023–2024 season when Manchester City won for the fourth consecutive year despite a near-miss from Arsenal

In the final week, Manchester City won with a 3-1 victory over West Ham United.

The 2023–24 season saw Josep Guardiola’s Manchester City win the league with 91 points, and that was their tenth consecutive title.

Arsenal remained in the hunt for the title with a 2-1 home victory over Everton. The Sky Blues didn’t lose any points, and this made it difficult for the Gunners to end what we may call their 20-year title drought.

With 91 points, Manchester City clinched the 2023–24 title. Arsenal came in second with 89 points, then Liverpool with 82 points. Aston Villa had  68 points,  Tottenham 66, and Chelsea 63.

While clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Manchester City have all had a shot at winning the Premier League trophy, Tottenham has been largely unsuccessful despite playing in every game from the league’s start.

The Premier League has not only produced three of the previous five European champions (including two all-English finals during that time), but it has also been using its financial strength to attract global talent.

The League has always jumped at the chance to sign players from diverse backgrounds and races, and they continue to play an important role in the battle against racism.

With a great blend of domestic and foreign talent, their popularity extends beyond the UK.

    La Liga

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, two of the most famous and prosperous clubs in the world, play in Spain’s La Liga, which is home to the best club competitions on a national, European, and global level.

As Real Madrid demonstrated in a recent 4-4 tie with Villarreal (which led them to secure their championship) in week 37 of the Spanish La Liga 2023–2024 season, the league is notorious for keeping a high tempo from the first to the last match.

“Football is a game of mistakes,” said Johan Cruyff, a Dutch football legend. This quote rings particularly true in La Liga, where even the smallest errors can lead to dramatic turnarounds.

After Arda Guler scored twice against Villarreal, he surpassed Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain and Harry Kane of Bayern Munich to become the player with the most impressive minutes-per-goal ratio in all five major European leagues this season.

However, in Villarreal’s 4–1 victory over Real Madrid, the Norwegian Alexander Sorloth—a former player for Trabzonspor—scored every goal.

Among other notable teams in La Liga, Sevilla, Atleti, and Villarreal have all won the Europa League in the past six seasons, and Atletico Madrid hasn’t gone past the quarterfinals of the Champions League since 2016–17.

However, Spanish football has fallen from its lofty heights of a few years back. Stars are getting old or leaving, and teams outside of the top three or four find it hard to make enough money to contend with their Premier League rivals.

    Bundesliga

Bundesliga is popular for its enthusiastic fan base and record-breaking attendance. Stories change, and, in this case, the Bundesliga’s might just not be any different. In fact, many European soccer fans, particularly those in Germany, enjoy betting on Bundesliga matches on top betting sites. If you’re interested in placing a wager, MightyTips ranks the best in Germany to help you make informed decisions.

Before now, it made sense to compare the Bundesliga to the Premier League. But, just two teams from the Bundesliga have made it to the UEFA Champions League finals since Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund and Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern Munich met in 2013—more than a decade ago.

An article from 888sport states that the 2022–2023 season had a real title, but that even that was capped off by Bayern winning the Bundesliga once again. After the incredible run that Bayer Leverkusen had under Xabi Alonso in 2023–24, they began to pose a threat in the early months of that season.

According to 888sport, the Bundesliga might return to the top three if Bayer Leverkusen makes a sustained title campaign and becomes a power in Europe. And it happened not long after that. The odds of 1.25 were fair, and 888sport came out on top.

Bayer Leverkusen won the Bundesliga without losing a game in the 2023–24 season.

    Serie A

With a long tradition of technical brilliance, Italy’s Serie A has produced numerous champions at the European and global levels. As Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo once said, “Football is a skill, but it’s also a lot of work, a lot of dedication.” This dedication to technical excellence was obvious when Inter and Lazio battled to a 1-1 tie in an exciting Serie A matchup.

Inter Milan, the reigning Italian Serie A champions, played host to Lazio on Sunday and managed to draw 1-1.

However, AC Milan, who were the league runners-up,  lost to Torino 3-1.

Following Salernitana’s relegation, Sassuolo’s 2-0 loss against Cagliari sent them down to the bottom of the table with just one week remaining.

Inter leads the 2023–2024 league with 93 points after 34 weeks, while Milan is in second place with 74, Bologna and Juventus are tied for first with 67 points apiece, and Atalanta are in fourth place with 66.

With the semi-final match between Milan and Inter, three Italian teams advanced to the next round of the 2022–23 Champions League.

After winning the Conference League for 2021–22, Roma made it to the final of the Europa League. The 2022–23 Conference League saw Fiorentina reach the finals.

For a league that has faltered in recent years compared to the likes of the Premier League, Bundesliga, and La Liga, that is an impressive list of achievements.

    Ligue 1

Although Ligue 1 is frequently regarded as the lesser of the Big Five leagues when it comes to enterprise value and winning European and global titles, it still manages to develop top-tier players and is the birthplace of Paris Saint-Germain, a club that has a major impact on a global scale.

Champions of the Ligue 1 PSG wins to end the season

Defending French Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won a 2-0 away victory over Metz in week 34.

With 76 points, PSG finished the 2023–2024 season, having already announced their championship in the weeks before. Next season, both Brest and Monaco will be in the UEFA Champions League groups thanks to their respective 67-point totals. Among the league’s teams, Olympique Lyonnais has 53 points, Nice has 55, and Lille has 59.
